Matter + Thread
The Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Matter is the application layer; Thread is one of the networks under it. Matter 1.4 added energy devices. 1.5 added cameras. Matter 1.6 (June 2026) is the current public cut: Joint Fabric — one shared Matter network co-administered by authorised controllers — plus NFC commissioning. No new device types in 1.6. The large platforms still lag the spec in shipping products.
For a building or a factory: Matter is how you avoid buying a closed “smart” cloud. Prefer a local fabric over a vendor relay.
Battery-less tags
Ambient IoT
3GPP Release 19 standardises passive tags a 5G-Advanced base station can read. Bluetooth Ambient IoT uses phones and access points as readers. The pitch is unpowered assets at retail scale. The security model is immature compared with Matter device attestation.
Interesting later for inventory. Not a 2026 install.
ACMA numbering · in force
Australia — 09 numbers
From 25 March 2026, new IoT and machine-to-machine services must use 09 numbers, not 04. Existing 04 IoT SIMs stay. 09 does not port between carriers. Bring-your-own-SIM IoT should be 09. Source: ACMA, “Internet of Things (IoT) numbers”, current as of September 2026.
Any modem brought up after that date should not be issued a 04. Inventory SIMs the same way laptops are inventoried.
How this shows up in the work
A site that needs sensors does not need a new cloud. It needs a local fabric, an inventory of every endpoint (including SIMs), and a hard line between reading and actuating. The Lab already holds a local operational picture. That is a map, not a product SKU.
Default passwords, vendor relays, and “anyone-with-the-link” cameras are how buildings get out-of-bounds. Prefer local Matter over a vendor cloud. Do not put a device that can move something on an unsupervised agent.
What not to do
Do not stand up a MAX IO “IoT 2.0 platform.” Do not buy a closed smart-building stack because the brochure said interoperability. Sensors may read; anything that moves waits for a person.
